Dementia - Innovative care for persons with dementia
Dementia is becoming cause of death #1
In 2030 dementia will be the main cause of death in the Netherlands. The actual cause of death will then be for example pneumonia or the consequences of a fall. Because people with dementia have a weaker system, these disorders lead more quickly to death. This shows a foresight for public health which was handed over to minister Schippers by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
Dementia will become more often the cause of death because people are living longer and therefore the number of people with dementia increases. Life expectancy has increased over the past 10 years with more than 3 years, and is still rising. In 2030, the life expectancy of men will be 82 years and for women 85 years. Due to the aging population the Netherlands will have around seven million people with chronic illness in 2030. That's about forty percent of the total population, while at this moment it is 32 percent.
